Ahead of the Memorial Day holiday, Columbia Gas has announced $10,000 in grants to military and veteran support organizations in Central Kentucky. The donations are made possible by the NiSource Charitable Foundation, the philanthropic organization of Columbia Gas’ parent company.
The funding was used to support Military Missions, the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) and the Lexington Fisher House. The organizations are also supported by NiVets, a Columbia Gas employee resource group for veterans and supporters.
“As we celebrate those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country this Memorial Day weekend, we are honored to continue our support of organizations that serve and advocate for the soldiers and veterans on our team and in the communities, we serve,” said Columbia Gas President & COO Kimra Cole.
Military Missions, a Lexington organization that sends care packages to soldiers deployed in the United States and abroad, received a $5,000 grant. The organization will use the funding to purchase items for care packages and to help cover the rising cost of shipping. Military Missions relies on bulk item donations like candy, non-perishable snacks, greeting cards and travel-size toiletries. Volunteers then sort and pack the donations that are shipped for Easter, Independence Day, during the Fall and at Christmas. Last year, the organization shipped packages to 6,600 soldiers.

The Bluegrass Chapter of the Association of the United States Army received a $2,500 grant. The organization provides educational, recreational and professional development opportunities for Army personnel -- including retirees, Wounded Warriors and the National Guard -- and their families. Donations to the organization support mentorship programs, family support resources and scholarships.
