Columbia Gas of Kentucky is pleased to announce a $25,000 grant to the Lexington Rescue Mission for a new facility in downtown Lexington that will provide meals and support services to the homeless.
The donation was made possible by the NiSource Charitable Foundation, the philanthropic organization of Columbia Gas’ parent company. The funding will cover the installation a natural gas commercial kitchen in a facility the organization is renovating on West Second Street.
“We’re proud to partner with the Lexington Rescue Mission to ensure that families in need receive the nourishment and support they need,” said Kimra Cole, president and COO of Columbia Gas. “We applaud the Rescue Mission’s relentless service and advocacy efforts on behalf of our most vulnerable neighbors.”
The new facility will triple the Rescue Mission’s current dining space to make room for a rising number of families served by the organization each day. The Rescue Mission currently serves free breakfast and lunch to about 120 people a day but can only seat about 35 guests at a time at its current outreach center on Glen Arvin Avenue.
In addition to more dining and food preparation and storage space, the new community center will include additional space for the Rescue Mission’s support services, including substance abuse treatment, housing assistance, employment training and optional ministry outreach.
