Supporting those in need

In response to the recent economic downturn, Columbia Gas of Kentucky and the NiSource Charitable Foundation are reaching out to support grassroots organizations that help provide food, clothing, shelter and other basic needs in many Kentucky communities.
As a part of this effort, called Supporting Those In Need, three organizations – the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross, God’s Pantry Food Bank, and the YMCA Campaign for Kids – were identified and provided with one-time grants to support their work.
When disaster strikes, the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross is there to help. This grant will enable the organization to meet the growing need for disaster response activities in Central Kentucky.
God’s Pantry Food Bank is providing more meals to families unable to make ends meet through their Mobile Pantry program. The program not only provides immediate relief, it also works with community leaders to establish permanent food banks those communities.
The YMCA Campaign for Kids provides financial scholarships for after-school and extra-curricular programs for a growing number of families. “We’ve had a huge increase in requests for financial assistance due to the tough economy, so your gift couldn’t have come at a better time," said Brenda Blakovich, director of financial development for the YMCA of Central Kentucky.
